My Approach

I am trained as an integrative counsellor, which means I can draw on different approaches depending on the issue, and the way of working that suits you best.

My integrative training is based in the person centred counselling approach. So what does this mean?

​

The therapeutic relationship is key to the counselling process. You need to feel safe in order to talk openly. I focus on building trust by accepting and valuing you as you are, and by being genuine, empathetic, and non judgemental.

I let you take the lead on sessions, which means you have full control over what you choose, or don't choose, to talk about. You are the expert on yourself and will know the pace you feel comfortable working at.

Counselling is not about giving advice, but about supporting you to explore your own issues and, if needed, finding coping strategies that work for you.

Sometimes our thoughts become jumbled and overwhelming. I work together with you to unjumble and make sense of these thoughts, exploring issues to help process things in a clear and safe way. 

I won't interrupt you whilst you are talking. I will sit with you and support you whilst you process your thoughts and feelings. I will occasionally ask questions or make observations about what you've said. This could be to gain clarity, or to help you explore something further.​

Below are some of the main theories I am trained in. I can also work creatively. This could involve drawing, sand play, creative writing, or using creative resources such as pictures or objects to explore things more deeply.

Counselling is open ended. It is completely up to you, what you feel you need and what works best for you.

Gestalt Therapy

Gestalt therapy looks at the immediate present, how you are feeling currently, and what might be influencing that. It focuses on increasing awareness of self and environment to manage how you respond to situations.

CBT

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) looks at what your are experiencing now by looking at your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, and ways of managing or coping with this.

Transactional Analysis

TA looks at the ways in which you interact and relate to others. This can be a really useful approach to explore if you are having difficulties with relationships.

Mindfulness

Mindfulness is about the here and now. Focussing on this can be done in many different ways to suit you, your interests, and way of living.
